Employers: Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Addiction in the Workplace

In a nation with twenty-three million people addicted to drugs and alcohol, two hundred thousand getting recovered through addiction treatment every year, and twenty million alive and well living in recovery, addiction and recovery is a pretty huge factor in our nation.

With so many people addicted to drugs and alcohol all across the country, it comes as no surprise that addiction is growing in prevalence in the American workplace. Sadly, it is becoming simply more and more regular to find substance abusers within workplaces, which is concerning and worrisome, to say the least. As it stands right now, substance abuse has been appearing with more prevalence in the workforce than it ever did before, which is concerning for Americans everywhere, to say the least. Now, drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse, in general, is a pretty cataclysmic problem, one of which we as a country need to come together and focus more intensively on as soon as is possible.

Combating Addiction and Substance Abuse

Employers really should not ignore addiction in the workplace. At this point, it is all across our country and in all 50 states that we hear terrible things about rapidly increasing drug and alcohol addiction problems that wreak havoc in this beautiful nation of ours. Unfortunately, since the turn-of-the-century, the United States has been experiencing one of the most difficult and unpleasant substance abuse issues than it has ever seen. In fact, most studies show that the 21st-century has indeed brought on the single most difficult and unpleasant addiction crisis and epidemic that this country has ever seen. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even published an official report on the subject in 2012. They officiated that addiction had reached the threat levels of addiction in this country to the point of being a full-on epidemic, something that they had never done before.

Substance abuse and addiction have not only been a problem, it has been a crisis, but it has never been an epidemic. Then, in 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave another study on the issue and even mentioned to the president at that time that substance abuse and addiction was approaching the point of being a full-on national emergency, and that this problem was going to get totally out of control if Americans did not do something very quickly to address it. What this meant was that substance abuse was getting a lot worse, and it was getting a lot worse every single year essentially. It became all too clear all too quickly in the last few years that our number one biggest health concern in the entire country is indeed with substance abuse. The unfortunate truth of the matter here is that substance abuse is a very risky and unpleasant scenario for all who experience it, as it is something that needs to be dealt with with a lot more resolve and determination to handle it. It will take a monumental change in how we operate regarding addiction, but that is what is needed and necessary to firmly and completely address the problem once and for all and for good.

Addiction in the Workplace

When we look at this issue more closely, we can really start to see that addiction in the workplace is a pretty serious and pressing concern, especially when the above facts and statistics are considered. Sure enough, substance abuse at work has never been as prevalent as it is now, and the effects of drugs in the workplace has had a heavy toll, especially in the last few years. Employers need to take heed of this issue and do their part to prevent substance abuse from occurring amongst their employees.
